Richard Ferrell, MD | Psychiatrist, Associate Professor Emeritus | Dartmouth College

Backed by nearly five decades of professional expertise, Richard Ferrell, MD is a highly regarded educator and psychiatrist. Having dedicated 49 years to clinical work, he excelled as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Dartmouth College Geisel School of Medicine from 1975 to 1981, at which time he was honored as associate professor emeritus. Dr. Ferrell remains active in the educational realm, as he wrote the course, “The History of The Field of Medicine” for the 2022 academic year and continues to contribute to articles and professional journals.

At the start of his professional journey, Dr. Ferrell earned a Bachelor of Arts from DePauw University in 1965, followed by a Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University in 1969. Subsequently, he became a diplomate and certified in geriatric psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in 1975 and 2001, respectively, as well as a diplomate in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties in 2006.

To remain abreast of his field, Dr. Ferrell maintains affiliation with the American Neuropsychiatric Association as an electrical fellow and electrical councilor and the American Psychiatric Association as a distinguished life fellow, as well as the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. In addition, he has served as a board member of Opera North in Lebanon, New Hampshire from 1991 to 1997 and as a girls’ basketball coach with the Hanover Recreation Department from 1982 to 2009. In his spare time, Dr. Ferrell enjoys reading, traveling, music, and exercise.
